Testing and monitoring took place in advance of an extension to Trinity Cottage, Churchtown, Carne, Co. Wexford. The property abuts the boundary wall of the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, which is the site of the medieval parish church of Carne. The churchyard now contains a derelict Church of Ireland church of 19th-century date, which incorporates original fabric from the medieval church.
The development necessitated both the excavation to subsoil of an area of ground adjacent to the boundary wall and the removal of a section of the boundary wall dividing the two properties. Testing took place in September 2003.
Two trenches were excavated across the area of the proposed extension and percolation area by a tracked mechanical digger. Natural subsoil was exposed at a depth of 0.4–0.6m. No deposits of archaeological significance were exposed and the only finds recovered were of post-medieval and modern date. Monitoring of the removal of a section of the adjacent boundary wall took place in December 2003. No architectural fragments were visible in the fabric of the wall.
