The trenches for this phase of testing along the proposed route of the N4 road improvement were laid out along the centre-line of the road-take, with offset trenches extending to the edge of the road-take. Apart from two pairs of fulachta fiadh, subsequently excavated by Avril Hayes (Newdown townland, Mullingar, No. 2000 below, 03E1666, and Heathstown townland, Mullingar, No. 1973 above, 03E1694), nothing else of archaeological significance was detected. Numerous agricultural features were noted, including relict field boundaries, cultivation furrows and land drains, as well as naturally occurring geological features.
