Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out along the route of the N4/N6 Kinnegad to Kilcock Motorway scheme (No. 1951, Excavations 2003, 03E0803). During the course of topsoil-stripping on 11 July 2003 a small charcoal-filled feature was identified at Chainage 3847 and was subsequently designated Kinnegad 6. Excavation took place on 18 July. The feature appeared to be isolated, though similar features had been found nearby during previous archaeological investigations (Kinnegad 1–5, Excavations 2002, Nos 1877-1881).
The feature was circular to oval in shape, measuring 0.9m east-west by 1m, and had a maximum depth of 0.05m. It was filled with a clay silt containing frequent inclusions of charcoal and oxidised clay. While no other features were identified within the cutting, this feature may be associated with sites Kinnegad 1–5, which are in the immediate area.
