Excavations at a development site in Hall, Co. Westmeath, took place on 1 December 2003. The development envisages the construction of a machinery shed and an attendant gravel drive and gravel yard. The north-western field boundary of the site kinks around the fosse of a large platform ringfort (SMR 36:28).
Two trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed shed and gravel yard. They revealed that the site has a thin layer of topsoil underlain by a blue/grey silty clay subsoil in the lower, wetter, parts of the site and a grey/brown sandy subsoil in the slightly higher sections of the site. The proposed site has been disturbed by the insertion of a number of modern field drains and an organic deposit has developed in a hollow area where standing water is prevalent. The testing did not reveal any features or finds.
