Testing was carried out ahead of gravel and sand extraction for Roadstone Provinces Ltd in a small area of Derryarkin Bog, Co. Westmeath. The area to be developed measured 400m by 30m. The proposed development site had been milled by Bord na Móna over the past 30 years with an estimated removal of some 3m of peat. During the monitoring of nineteen trenches, the maximum depth of peat uncovered was 1.15m. In all trenches the peat was removed to expose sterile gravel contained within a coarse sand and boulder clay mix. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered, either in the archaeological walkover or associated testing.
