An archaeological impact assessment was undertaken of a proposed development site at Newgate Street, Waterford. Four test-trenches were excavated. The structural history of a wall forming the west boundary of the site and believed to be on the line of the medieval city walls was also investigated.
Evidence from documentary sources indicates that the city wall here was demolished in the 18th century, as it was in an unstable and dangerous condition. An inspection of the fabric of the wall confirmed the presence of brick as a general building material and would imply that the wall was constructed in relatively modern times. Testing identified no evidence for activity pre-dating the 19th century.
