An assessment was carried out at Knockhouse Lower, c. 3km west of Waterford city. As a result of a geophysical survey it was recommended that further testing be carried out to establish the full nature and extent of the anomalies identified. Seven test-trenches were mechanically excavated across the proposed development area. The archaeological deposits were recorded and left in situ.
The geophysical survey identified a subcircular enclosure with numerous pit-type anomalies in the south-eastern corner of the field. Trenches 5 and 6 were located in this area. A complex of pits and burnt spreads were exposed within a subcircular ditch. The series of field boundaries, agricultural furrows and land drains revealed through the geophysical survey were also located and recorded. Full excavation was recommended in advance of construction.
