As part of the Waterford Outer Ring Road scheme, it is proposed to construct a 20m-wide roadway between Kilbarry Bog and Couse Bridge. An archaeological assessment of the bog area (including St John's River) and the river crossing at Couse Bridge was undertaken prior to works' commencement. Assessment was conducted along a 270m stretch of Couse Stream and its attendant bank structures. Archaeological survey of an area of marshland east of Couse Bridge was also undertaken. However, the focus of the investigation proved to be Couse Bridge (19th-century construction) and a detailed description, plan and elevation of the structure was made. A 150m stretch of St John's River was investigated, along with a large area of Kilbarry Bog (c. 200m). No archaeologically significant material was encountered at either location.
