Excavation at Site 25(vi) was carried out in Phase 3 of investigations in advance of construction of the N8 Cashel Bypass and N74 Link Road on behalf of South Tipperary County Council. The scheme involves a 6km bypass route of the town and a 2km link road of the N74.
Phase 2 testing in area 25 by Neil Fairburn (No. 1719, Excavations 2003, 03E0295) identified six separate areas of archaeological activity. Each area, designated 25(i–vi), was excavated under a separate licence. Testing work in the area of Site 25(vi) had initially identified an area of burning.
Site 25(vi) was located between Chainages 4610 and 4620 and was 10m wide on average. It was located in fairly low-lying land, with a very gentle slope southwards just north of the Fethard road. The site consisted of a large, roughly oval-shaped feature which contained areas of burnt natural, charcoal flecking and manganese deposits. No further features showed up during the topsoil-stripping and the oval feature proved to be a shallow and naturally occurring one. No further work was carried out in this area.
