The proposed small residential/commercial development is a westward extension of the site reported on in Excavations 1999 (No. 833, 99E0489). Testing showed that there was nothing on the northern part of the site but on the southern side there was a marked drop with a thick peaty deposit at the base. Initially it was thought that this was connected with the low swampy area which had existed to the south, but when one end was machine excavated a layer of horn cores was uncovered at the base of the peat. Work was halted at this stage and it was decided to change from a strip to raft foundation, which would not disturb the deposit. There was no dating evidence from the peaty deposit.
