Monitoring of excavation works for the construction of an extension to a supermarket carpark, driveway and services was undertaken in the centre of Killenaule. The removal of sod and topsoil had been carried out prior to archaeological monitoring of the project. The only feature of note found was a ditch measuring 1.5m wide and just over 1m deep. It was uncovered during the digging for a service trench. Given that topsoil had been removed, it was not possible to conclusively establish its depth. Its fill comprised abundant pieces of rounded and subangular stones which were bound within a dark-brown, slightly sandy clay. One piece of creamware was present within the fill. It is suggested this feature was originally cut as a boundary ditch, which was filled by land clearance for horticultural/agricultural activities.
Nothing of significant archaeological importance was found on this site, which was not surprising given that substantial parts of the site had been previously stripped of sod and topsoil.
