Testing carried out on this site by Mary Henry in 2000 uncovered articulated and disarticulated human remains in a burial ground that is probably associated with the nearby Fever Hospital (Excavations 2000, No. 933). These were dated to the late 1830sā1840s. The burial ground ran the length of the site, c. 55m, and varied between 11 and 22m wide.
As it was proposed to develop the remainder of the site as a supermarket, the developers proposed to span the burial ground at its narrowest point with a bridge, thus allowing access to the site and preserving the archaeology. Piles were driven either side of the burial ground to support the bridge. Monitoring of the excavation around the pile caps did not uncover any human remains or archaeological deposits.
Monitoring of the reduction of levels of the remainder of the site only uncovered features such as greenhouse foundations and paths associated with the use of the site as a nursery and garden in the period 1850ā1900.
