It is proposed to build a new house in the garden of an existing bar and lounge in the village of Cloneen, Co. Tipperary (South Riding). An assessment will provide one element of a forthcoming planning application. Excavation and monitoring of two trial holes, c. 2m deep, and four percolation holes, 0.3-0.6m deep, was carried out on 4 October to assess suitability for insertion of a septic tank/percolation area. Excavation was carried out by mechanical excavator with a 1m-wide bucket. The site is near a deer park (SMR 71:45) in Kilburry West townland, Cloneen Church and graveyard (SMR 71:3) in Ballyhomuck townland and Cloneen House (SMR 71:2).
No finds or features of archaeological importance were observed during monitoring.
