Testing at Site 18 was carried out on behalf of South Tipperary County Council in advance of construction of the N8 Cashel Bypass and N74 Link Road. The scheme involves a 6km bypass route of the town and a 2km link road of the N74.
Site 18 had previously been tested by Anne Marie Lennon during phase 1 pre-construction works in 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 1704, 02E0286) and was identified as an area of high archaeological potential due to its close proximity to a medieval moated site (SMR 61:27).
Testing and excavation in the vicinity of this area was conducted as part of Phase 2 archaeological resolution in March and April 2003. A number of south-west/north-east linear features, stone drains and plough furrows, as well as a small number of post-holes, pits, burnt features and stake-holes, were identified. The features identified in Phase 2 were resolved by Joanne Hughes in Phase 3 of the investigations (No. 1703, Excavations 2003).
