Excavation at Site 16 was carried out in Phase 3 investigations on behalf of South Tipperary County Council in advance of construction of the N8 Cashel Bypass and N74 Link Road. The scheme involves a 6km bypass route of the town and a 2km link road of the N74.
Phase 2 testing work in this section of the proposed N74 Link Road was carried out in April 2003 (No. 1719, Excavations 2003, 03E0295). It uncovered a number of features, including a number of linear features and pits.
The whole area of Site 16 was stripped of topsoil, exposing a small number of prehistoric and a large number of modern features. The prehistoric activity consisted of three large pits containing burnt stone and charcoal. These pits may be associated with the prehistoric activity recorded on adjacent sites.
The post-medieval features consisted predominantly of cultivation furrows, as well as wide, shallow drainage ditches.
