The proposed development, to consist of the demolition of the existing buildings on the site and the construction of a new, mixed-use building, is located on the south side of John Street, Sligo. As it is within the zone of archaeological potential for the medieval town, monitoring was carried out over a number of weeks. Due to the unstable nature of the walls of the buildings to either side, underpinning was required prior to the excavation of the foundation trenches. The foundations of the demolished building sat upon a layer of late 18th/early 19th-century rubble, including red brick, early modern crockery and bottle glass. This rubble layer was up to 0.5m deep and rested directly atop a compact gravelly grey subsoil. There was no evidence of any archaeological finds or deposits.
