Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed dwelling-house and ancillary site works was carried out at Grange townland, Co. Sligo, on 22 April 2003. The proposed development was located within the constraint area for a field system (SMR 5:33). The site consisted of an area of rough ground sandwiched between recent housing developments, a short distance north of Grange village.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches, which measured 17.5m, 13.5m, 12.8m and 18.6m long, respectively, 1.3–1.4m wide and 0.15–0.8m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil and disturbed subsoil, above mottled firm clay loam. A 30mm-diameter water main and a field drain were also uncovered. The topsoil and disturbed subsoil contained modern artefacts. A base sherd of post-medieval pottery was also found in the topsoil. The mottled firm clay loam was sterile natural subsoil.
The lack of topsoil on the site would suggest that this site has been stripped beforehand, probably during construction of the adjacent dwellings. The site has also been extensively disturbed by two water mains and the land drain.
