Testing and monitoring were carried out along the route of the proposed realignment of the R284 (Ballygawley-Sligo road) between 24 June and 8 July 2003. The site was of mixed topography, comprising a low-lying, boggy valley which rose sharply to a grassy hillock to the north, at the top of which was a ringfort (SMR 20:124). Four trenches were initially excavated at the site and a programme of monitoring followed. In the course of monitoring, a fulacht fiadh was discovered in the boggy area; this was excavated by Tom Rogers (No. 1647 below, 03E1041). During further monitoring, on 10 and 11 November, a second fulacht fiadh was discovered some 160m south of the first.
