Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed new graveyard at Cloghermore townland, Calry, Co. Sligo, was carried out on 25 and 26 August 2003. The proposed development is near ecclesiastical remains (SMR 15:44).
Five trenches, which measured 50.4–51.7m long, 0.75–1.1m wide and 0.2–1.25m deep, were excavated by machine. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil above orange/grey/brown friable silt loam and grey/brown plastic clay with occasional rocks. An area of backfill in one of the trenches was the remains of a monitored trial hole dug in 2000. Five sherds of modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil.
The friable silt loam and plastic clay were sterile natural subsoils. The evidence from all five trenches, with the exception of the backfilled area, was of undisturbed natural stratigraphy.
