Monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the development of an extension to the visitor centre at Carrowmore was undertaken in September and October 2003. The proposed development involved the extension of the building to the east and the provision of services, including a wastewater treatment plant. The archaeological brief included the excavation of a trench in the area of the wastewater treatment plant and the monitoring of excavations for service trenches and the percolation area. The site of the percolation trenches had previously been tested by Stefan Bergh.
The trench excavated near the carpark revealed nothing of archaeological significance and subsequent monitoring of service and percolation trenches showed that the proposed development would not affect any archaeological layers or features. The stratigraphy throughout consisted of sod and topsoil overlying subsoil.
