Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed house, septic tank, with proprietary effluent treatment system and percolation area, and ancillary site works at Carrowmably, Dromore West, Co. Sligo, was carried out on 8 October 2003. The proposed development was located partially within the archaeological constraint for a midden (SMR 12:124). The site was on the coast, c. 1.5km north-north-east of Dromore West village.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches, which measured 40.4m, 31.5m, 16.1m, 7.4m and 50.9m long, respectively, 1.45–1.6m wide and 0.2–0.75m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil above grey/brown friable sandy silt loam and bedrock. The topsoil contained modern artefacts only. The orange/grey/brown friable sandy silt loam was sterile natural subsoil. The testing revealed evidence of natural undisturbed stratigraphy.
