Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed house, septic tank, with proprietary effluent treatment system and percolation area, and ancillary site works at Carrowmably, Dromore West, Co. Sligo, was carried out on 8 October 2003. The proposed development was located partially within the archaeological constraint for a midden (SMR 12:124). The site was on the coast, c. 1.5km north-north-east of Dromore West village.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches, which measured 40.4m, 31.5m, 16.1m, 7.4m and 50.9m long, respectively, 1.45-1.6m wide and 0.2-0.75m deep. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil above grey/brown friable sandy silt loam and bedrock. The topsoil contained modern artefacts only. The orange/grey/brown friable sandy silt loam was sterile natural subsoil. The testing revealed evidence of natural undisturbed stratigraphy.
