Testing was carried out on the site of a proposed residential development at Kilcolman, Co. Roscommon, on 10 February 2003. The site measures 148m by 86m and is located c. 70m south-west of a castle site. There are no visible structural remains of the castle, but the site is indicated as an earthwork on OS maps. Kilcolman takes its name from the church of St Colman, which is located c. 200m north-west of the development site. Testing comprised the mechanical excavation of eight trenches (25–75m long) on the footprint of the proposed development. The stratigraphy was uniform across the site, a grey/brown silt topsoil, 0.35m deep, overlying mixed but predominantly yellow/brown silty clay subsoil. No archaeological material was discovered.
