Monitoring was carried out during pre-construction works at Crannaghbeg, Co. Roscommon. The development consisted of the erection of a telecommunications support structure, antennae, an equipment compound measuring 15m by 15m and an access road, including the upgrading of an existing road. The support for the mast required a foundation of 3.4m by 3.8m excavated to a depth of 1.2m. The development is located in an area of small rolling hills, with the mast sited on the summit of the highest of these and the access road zigzagging up the slope towards it. The site of the mast is within the constraint zone of a cashel, SMR 52:9, and an earthwork site, SMR 52:8, lies immediately to its south-west. There is currently no trace of either of these monuments.
An average of 0.1–0.2m of topsoil was removed onto the subsoil, which varied from pale grey coarse sand to yellow silty clay; a large amount of stone, including large limestone boulders, was present in both types of subsoil. Despite the high potential of the area, no features or artefacts of archaeological significance were uncovered.
