The development consisted of the installation of a floating jetty, access ramps, carpark, bus access and turning area and associated works, on the east bank of the River Shannon, immediately upstream of Jamestown Bridge. The requirement of monitoring arose out of recommendations made in a report submitted to the National Monuments Service of a geophysical riverbank and underwater survey carried out by Boland Archaeological Services Ltd in July 2003 (licence 03R063), undertaken in fulfilment of a condition attached to the grant of planning permission by Roscommon County Council. The site is situated c. 80m north of the Doon of Drumsna (SMR 11:58), a large linear earthwork.
The monitoring was concerned with the levelling of material previously dredged from the riverbed and now overlying the original riverbank, and any other significant ground disturbance associated with the development. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted during the monitoring, which was carried out during August 2003.
