Excavation was carried out in November/December 2003, when the site was uncovered during monitoring of soil-stripping ahead of construction for the N4 road realignment scheme, 3km west of Carrick-on-Shannon to 8km east of Boyle. Lying on a north-facing slope of a low hill, this site was discovered during machine stripping of the ground surface.
Further excavation of the underlying material revealed the presence of several earlier archaeological deposits of burnt material separated by layers of soil.
