Offaly County Council undertook monitoring of excavation of previously undug portions of the scheme. This consisted of four parts.
Topsoil-stripping of an area north and west of the Pumping Station on the Ferbane Road measuring 120m by 40m, to accommodate an extension to the station, was monitored and three small areas within it, excavated to a maximum depth of 4m to accommodate the installation of tanks, were also monitored.
An area 5m by 45m and up to a maximum of 1m deep was dug westwards from the north-west corner of the Pumping Station to accommodate a farm road. A trench was dug from the Moate Road to the small secondary road north of it, a distance of 250m. The topsoil was taken off a strip 22m wide and the trench dug to a maximum depth of 2m.
About 32 cubic metres of fill was taken from the bed of the River Brosna, outside the north-east corner of the Pumping Station, to a depth of 2.9m below the level of the water.
Generally the terrain consisted of c. 0.3m of peaty topsoil, and white/grey clay or marl as deep as the excavations. No material of archaeological significance was found during the monitoring.
