Following a survey by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (IAWU) in 2002 of Cloncreen Bog, a Bord na Móna production bog, a number sites were selected for excavation in the summer of 2003. This collection of sites included a find site, a north-south-oriented tertiary togher and an east-west-oriented secondary togher. Four 3m by 4m cuttings were excavated.
A notched timber artefact was found, the upper surface of which had been damaged by milling. It was accompanied by a number of pieces of brushwood, though no structural arrangement was apparent. The artefact lay from east to west and measured 2.1m long by 0.25m wide.
The tertiary togher consisted of an arrangement of north-south-oriented densely packed heavy brushwoods and roundwood that had been badly disturbed. This site could not be traced to the north or south and seems likely to have been part of an east-west-oriented structure.
The secondary togher had two cuttings excavated along its length. It had been very badly disturbed and, although both cuttings contained brushwood elements, there was no discernible pattern to the elements.
