The developer proposes to erect four two-storey apartment buildings, with one or two street-level retail units, on the site. The planning authority requires a walkway from the site across the line of the town wall as part of the development. Assessment of this site, and a survey of a portion of the town wall which forms the western boundary of the site, were required. Testing was undertaken. Seven trenches were excavated. Some of these went up to 3m from the remains of the town wall; others ran along the north and south boundaries of the site, which represent the medieval burgage plot boundaries. None of the trenches revealed archaeological material.
