The developer was asked to have an impact statement carried out in order to retain a dormer bungalow, already constructed, on a site close to a trivallate ringfort (SMR 6:25, Ballymahullog Fort) at Posseckstown, Nobber. It was argued by the planning authority that the house was constructed on a different site to the one for which planning was granted.
Three trenches tested undisturbed ground between the house and the ringfort. Trench 1 produced evidence for a ditch which was probably an outer ditch associated with the ringfort. The two other trenches tested reduced ground closer to the new house. There was no evidence for archaeological features in these trenches.
The ditch was likely to be associated with the ringfort and therefore following the curve of the ringfort away from the house. There was no disturbance associated with house construction in this part of the field, which will remain in pasture and will not be disturbed by further construction work.
