Three test-trenches were excavated on a development site on the corner of Bridge Street and Circular Road, Navan, on 11 and 12 November 2003. The site was formerly used as a petrol station. The development is located within the zone of archaeological potential established around the historic settlement of Navan.
The testing revealed that the site had been completely disturbed by its use as a petrol station. The service station buildings had been knocked down and gravel had been added to form a level surface across the site. Tarmac and concrete surfaces were also in evidence and, where the ground was undisturbed, these were laid directly on top of the underlying solid tan/brown stony natural.
