Monitoring was required at the proposed development of an eighteen-hole golf course, including driving range, temporary clubhouse and associated roadways and services. The development will involve substantial ground disturbance, in particular in the excavation of green areas, the emplacement of roadways and services, and during landscaping works for the laying out of the course.
Initial monitoring of groundworks took place in July and August 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 1467). Work was suspended for the winter and resumed in the summer. No archaeological features were discovered in any of the areas. Finds recovered during monitoring included pottery, both medieval and post-medieval, flint, clay-pipe fragments and glass.
