Pre-development testing was undertaken at the site of the proposed waste treatment plant and outfall pipe at Castletowntara, Tara, Co. Meath, in May 2003. The development will involve substantial ground disturbance, in particular in the excavation of large underground tanks, as well as service roads and an outfall pipe to the River Skane.

Test excavation consisted of the excavation by a mechanical digger fitted with a 2m-wide toothless ditching bucket of 54 trenches. Excavation was undertaken to the depth of natural undisturbed subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed in the trenches. No finds were recovered during testing.
