Testing was carried out at the site of an air system for Tara Mines at Boyerstown, Co. Meath. The development of the air system involved the construction of an air output return air raise (RAR) and an air intake fresh air raise (FAR). Each of the sites of the RAR and the FAR were investigated, using a mechanical digger fitted with a 2m ditching bucket. A cruciform pattern of two trenches, each the width of the machine bucket and 25m long, was excavated over the RAR; a similar pattern of two trenches, each measuring 10m long, was excavated over the FAR. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
