Test-trenches were excavated in advance of development at this site situated on the corner between the Rath Road and the N2. The trenches were excavated because of a diversion in the route of the Rath Road shown on the first-edition OS 6-inch map. The diversion appeared to be caused by a circular obstacle, possibly the rath after which the townland was named. Three trenches were excavated to the subsoil, at an average depth of c. 0.4m, in the area where the ditch of the ringfort should have been. No evidence of a ditch or any other features were noted. Despite the failure to find evidence for a ringfort, the area will be monitored during topsoil-stripping, under licence number 03E1715, when development commences.
