In September 2003 Mr Michael Gibbons inspected a site at Dooghmakeon, near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, at the request of An Garda Síochána. Mr Gibbons reported that the site consisted of an eroding layer of stone 0.4–0.6m below the present sod level of a machair dune. One human skull was visible at the base of this layer. Several other skulls and other human remains had been collected by Gardaí from Louisburgh Garda Station. The remains came to light following the removal of sand and sod caused by a blow-out. The report states that the site is located about 25–30m south-west of a children’s burial ground, but this site is not recorded on the OS maps or by the Archaeological Survey. The SMR records for the townland include a cross-slab, middens and burials, which may relate to the burials reported here.185 Human remains collected at the site have been deposited in the NMI.186 In February 2009 continued erosion of the site produced further human remains. The site was inspected by Richard Gillespie on behalf of the National Monuments Service, who reported the presence of bones representing at least five individuals.
