Monitoring of topsoil removal for a proposed dwelling-house and puraflow treatment system at Toorglass, Co. Mayo, was carried out on 1 September 2003. A cairn is located in the field beside the development site on the west. The driveway, house site and treatment area were stripped of topsoil. On the low ground at the front of the site, the grey/brown silty sand topsoil was 0.5m thick and overlay yellow/brown silty sand subsoil. On the higher ground the topsoil was thinner (0.35m thick) and very mixed, possibly as a result of agricultural practices, most likely the burning of vegetation and associated land reclamation works. No archaeological material was discovered during monitoring.
