Testing within the area of archaeological constraint of an enclosure was undertaken in November 2003. The site was investigated as part of the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme, Stage 1, Contract 6 (No. 1333, Excavations 2003, 03E1208).
The test area was 100m long by 15m wide and is c. 40m away from the monument. Four hand-dug trenches (5m by 2m) were excavated from topsoil to an undisturbed natural horizon at 10m intervals across the test area parallel to the road. Each trench was archaeologically sterile and no finds were recovered. The remaining test area was stripped, using a mechanical digger equipped with a toothless bucket, to undisturbed natural boulder clay. Modern disturbance was evidenced by group water scheme pipes running across the test area. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered.
