Pre-development testing of a house and garage development was carried out at Moyne, Headford, Co. Mayo, on 19 February 2003. The proposed development was near a castle (SMR 123:69).
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of six trenches. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil, above grey loose loamy sand, orange/grey/brown friable silt loam and orange/brown firm silty clay loam. Three sherds of modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil during testing.
The grey loose loamy sand, orange/brown firm silty clay loam and orange/grey/brown friable silt loam were sterile natural subsoils. The testing revealed undisturbed natural stratigraphy.
