An assessment was required in advance of construction of a base station and access road for a telecommunications mast. The length of the access route was c. 250m and it measured 5m in width.
There are two listed sites adjacent to the access road, a possible house site and a cashel. The route for the access road was immediately west of the cashel, the walls of which were clearly visible but very overgrown. The house site was not visible on the ground.
Six test-trenches were excavated, five of which were along the line of the access road and one at the location of the base station. The field had been extensively reclaimed and there were many large buried boulders below the topsoil layer. No archaeological features or deposits were identified. Given the archaeological potential of the area, it was recommended that all excavation works during the construction phase of the project be monitored. An extension to the testing licence was obtained to facilitate the monitoring. No archaeological finds or features were exposed during the course of monitoring the construction phase.
