Topsoil removal and pipe-laying associated with the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme, Stage I, Contract 6, is currently being monitored. The project involves pipe-laying between Balla and Ballyhean, Co. Mayo. Work began in late August 2003 and is ongoing.
The scheme is c. 20km long and the pipeline wayleave varies from 15 to 25m in width. The pipeline is being laid within undulating pastureland, low-lying marsh, existing roadway and roadside verge. A feature of the landscape to date is the thin nature of the topsoil, which covers limestone bedrock.
At the time of writing, pre-development testing has taken place within the area of archaeological constraint of two monuments (Nos 1338, 03E1612; and 1341, 03E1749, Excavations 2003). No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance have been identified to date.
