Pre-development testing at the site of a proposed dwelling-house, septic tank and percolation area at Keeloges New, Bellavary, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, was carried out on 15 November 2003. The site was within the constraint of an enclosure (SMR 70:219/79:21). The proposed house was located 12m from the edge of the enclosure, while the proposed driveway was located 5m away from the monument, which forms part of the eastern site boundary.
Six trenches were excavated by machine. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil, above light-brown friable sandy silt loam, light-brown firm sandy clay loam and grey loose sands and gravels. Below the topsoil in one trench was an area of fill and a small water main. Only modern artefacts were recovered from the topsoil.
The testing revealed natural undisturbed stratigraphy, with topsoil above natural subsoils and a natural glacial deposit. The fill appeared to be land clearance.
