Up to 3m of a large overgrown enclosure with an inner bank, a ditch and an outer bank was to be destroyed during road construction. However, the plans were altered to preserve the monument in situ, leaving a minimum buffer of 4m between the outer edge of the site and the development (i.e. the N26 road construction).
The area beside the enclosure was tested by opening six trial-trenches at 10m intervals across the development area. These trenches radiated out from the east side of the enclosure and were excavated to undisturbed natural subsoil and rock using a mechanical digger with a toothless bucket. Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of this testing.
