Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a dwelling-house, garage, proprietary effluent treatment plant, septic tank and percolation area took place on 1 February 2003 at Cool Lodge townland, Ballyheane, Co. Mayo. The development is within the constraint of an enclosure (SMR 89:24). The site was located in a field of pasture, on a steep south-facing slope.
The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil, above orange/brown friable sandy silt loam and grey loamy sand (i.e. natural subsoils). One undecorated clay-pipe stem and two sherds of modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil.
