Testing was carried out prior to road realignment works on the R335 (Westport to Louisburgh) at Churchfield, Co. Mayo, on 8 April 2003. This phase of the realignment project comprises the widening of a 700m section of the existing road in the townlands of Churchfield and Streamstown. The eastern 100m passes through the western edge of the areas of archaeological constraint around two sites of ecclesiastical remains in the townland of Churchfield.
Testing comprised the mechanical excavation of two 100m-long trenches in the areas of constraint around the monuments. The stratigraphy was uniform across the tested area, light-grey/brown silt topsoil, 0.3m deep, overlying orange/brown silty sand subsoil. No archaeological material was discovered during testing or during subsequent monitoring of topsoil removal across the remaining 600m section of the road realignment scheme in June 2003.
