An assessment was required in advance of construction of a base station and access road for a telecommunications mast in the townland of Caurans Upper or Oughterard. The entire length of the route was c. 250m and it was 5m in width. The access route crossed through a portion of an area recorded as being the location of possible enclosures; however, in the RMP files they are described as being 'non-antiquities'.
Six test-trenches were excavated in advance of construction, five of which were along the line of the access road and one at the location of the base station. No archaeological features or deposits were identified. Given the archaeological potential of the area, it was recommended that all excavation works during the construction phase of the project be monitored.
An extension to the testing licence was obtained to facilitate the monitoring. No archaeological finds or features were exposed during the course of monitoring the construction phase.
