Monitoring of geotechnical test-pits took place at the proposed development of a natural gas terminal site at Bellanaboy Bridge, Co. Mayo, located on peat bog. The development plans include the construction of a terminal building associated with the natural gas pipeline. Ten test-pits excavated by the project geologist were monitored over two days. The stratigraphy was uniform throughout all the test-pits. They were excavated to a depth of c. 3.5m. The upper 2.68m comprised red-brown moss peat. There were root fibres present in the upper 0.5m of this layer. Beneath the peat layers, grey-green boulder clay and moderately compacted sandy silt were exposed. No archaeological material was discovered in the course of monitoring of test-pits at this site.
