Monitoring of topsoil clearance for an extension to a primary school, incorporating two new classrooms, a new remedial room, a new general-purpose room and ancillary accommodation, took place at Tullyallen, Co. Louth. Tullyallen, c. 5 km north-west of Drogheda, is located within the area of archaeological potential for Drogheda, as identified in the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Louth.
Topsoil clearance consisted of the removal of 0.1m of topsoil and 0.5m of ploughsoil. The ploughsoil was mid-brown/grey, loosely compacted, silty clay with root fibres. There were very few stones present. The natural subsoil was yellow/brown stony clay with some angular stones. No subsoil-cut archaeological features were uncovered during the monitoring of topsoil clearance of the site.
