A second programme of testing was carried out at Marshes Upper on behalf of Dundalk Institute of Technology in August 2003. The proposed development, within the grounds of the Institute of Technology, is bound by the existing college complex to the north, the M1 motorway to the west, a number of fields to the east and an industrial estate to the south.
A geophysical survey of the area carried out by John Nicholls (2002) did not reveal any below-ground features that could be defined as archaeological in nature. The testing revealed an extensive system of modern land drains. An area (30m by 34m) of archaeological significance was identified. A series of possible post-holes and burnt spreads was identified. Further investigation and monitoring of the entire area was recommended.
