Monitoring of geotechnical trial-holes on the site of the proposed Nursing and Health Studies building was undertaken on 19 March 2003. The site is near numerous monuments, including souterrains, an enclosure, a holy well and earthworks. A number of unrecorded sites were identified by Matt Mossop during development works to the north-west (Excavations 2002, No. 1335, 02E0008).
Monitoring was carried out as an extension to a testing licence held for previous investigations on this site by Ines Hagen (Excavations 2002, No. 1343, 02E1661). Three trenches were excavated down into natural ground. The stratigraphy on the site comprised up to 0.3m of topsoil overlying natural subsoil. Two land drains were uncovered, but no archaeological material was found.
