Testing was undertaken at 11 Church Street, in advance of a proposed development entailing refurbishment works to the existing two-storey listed building, the demolition of an existing ruined extension and the construction of a new extension to the rear. The new construction will involve the excavation of foundation trenches at the rear of the site to a depth of c. 0.5m.
Testing took place on 18 March 2003 using a machine equipped with a flat toothless bucket. The trenches were excavated to the rear of the main building in the location of the proposed new extension. The testing indicated that there has been quite significant disturbance to the ground to the rear of the standing buildings. This activity, however, appears to be dated to the late post-medieval or modern period. Subsoil is evident immediately below a thin band of modern rubble in all of the trenches. The trenches revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
